Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
