Donald Trump's Framework of Retribution and Reward

Donald Trump's intense desire for retribution has quickly morphed into a methodical apparatus. Over the past year, the chief executive's rage and whims have assumed the shape of government actions in a manner reminiscent to earlier repressive systems. Government personnel who do not cooperate are promptly removed and succeeded by loyalists. Opposing figures who confront him face prosecution, trial and sanctions. Adversaries have been designated under presidential orders as “anti-American”, “against faith communities” and “opposing economic freedom”, and threatened with criminal charges as “extremists”.

Federal Agencies Transformed

Every instance involving targeting of Trump's enemies and protection for his allies exhibits its own distinct features. However, notwithstanding their particular character, they represent expressions of what has developed as a calculated method. These events are anything but coincidental. Trump's cleansing of Department of Justice lawyers and FBI personnel, accompanied by his installation of loyalists in high-level posts, commenced swiftly, promptly developed a consistency, and has now been shaped into a system. Federal prosecutors and the law enforcement agency have been restructured into partisan organizations under Trump's clear orders to implement his wishes. Injustice has been made standard. This is the apparatus of revenge.

Leadership is more concerned with punishing the leader's alleged opponents than they are with protecting our public welfare.

Within the Apparatus

The beginnings of this framework has been revealed in the lawsuit of three former high-ranking law enforcement officials submitted in late summer in the judicial system in DC against FBI director Kash Patel and justice department head another official for wrongful dismissal in “a initiative of retribution against them for what administration figures deemed to be a failure to demonstrate sufficient political loyalty”. According to the filing that one official, the previous interim leader, details a conversation in which Patel “openly acknowledged the impropriety of his actions”.

He had sought to shield FBI agents from being terminated, the complaint alleges. He advised him that “they” – perceived by the official to be the presidential administration and justice department – had directed him to dismiss everyone who they considered as having participated in a law enforcement case against him. The document goes on: “Patel explained that he had to fire the people his superiors told him to fire, because his chance to retain his own job depended on the ouster of the officials who handled matters involving the chief executive. He explained that there was no option he or the official could do to halt these or any other firings, because ‘the FBI sought to place the President in prison and he remembers.’” Once the official informed him he was violating the FBI's own policies, Patel allegedly said “he knew that and he realized the nature of the summary firings were probably unlawful”.

Broad Effects

Following Patel's reported confession to him, the DoJ and the law enforcement agency have been dismantled and repurposed for his system of punishment. Six of the agency's senior executives were terminated or pushed out in the early weeks of the government. Roughly numerous professional attorneys at the justice department have taken a “early exit scheme”. A minimum of several federal prosecutors, among them those in the Manhattan division, resigned in dissent over what they regarded as political interference in dropping the corruption case against the city leader, the mayor, in exchange for his cooperation with the administration's ICE detentions of migrants. The public integrity section of the department, which manages misconduct investigations, has been diminished to two attorneys. The civil rights division has been devastated: the majority of its employees has resigned. A third of senior leaders at DoJ have resigned. The division upholding conservation statutes has lost 50% its supervisors.

Rewards and Punishments

Concerning the Adams case, the interim prosecutor for the southern district of New York, Danielle Sassoon, resigned in objection against what she labeled as the “exchange”. The border official, his “enforcement chief,” showed up as the implementer with him on Fox News to declare: “If he doesn't come through, I'll be back in New York City.”. Additionally, a former official, previously the senior DoJ official and a past legal representative, who arranged the arrangement, was granted an appellate federal judgeship, a potential stepping stone to the judicial branch.

His exemption for wrongdoings carried out while in government, granted by the extraordinary ruling of the conservative on the supreme court, thus preventing his legal action over the political violence and safeguarding his public standing for the 2024 election, is the basis on which he depends to defend his supporters. With such immunity, he has been empowered to authorize misconduct. The impact of the supreme court decision permeates his administration and the political party down to its bones. The court matter has metastasized. Similar to the former president's administration lawyer he commented about the Watergate
