Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
