PSG Overcomes Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now claimed the season-opening cup on 14 different occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in Kuwait and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup victory.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the showdown featuring the French league champions and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring early on.

Yet, the southern French side struck two times in the closing moments to take a surprise advantage. First, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking twist of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital leveler in the final moments to force the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 4-1 penalty victory.

Now 14-time champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the last 13 years.
